Nirupa Roy – The Mother of Indian Cinema
Nirupa Roy was one of the most beloved and respected actresses in Indian cinema, best remembered for her iconic portrayals of a suffering yet strong mother. She was born as Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara on January 4, 1931, in Valsad, Gujarat, India.
She began her film career in the 1940s and gained recognition through mythological roles, often portraying goddesses such as Parvati and Sita. Later, in the 1950s and 1960s, she became the quintessential mother figure in Bollywood, starring in numerous memorable films. Her most famous roles include movies like “Deewaar” (1975), “Amar Akbar Anthony” (1977), “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar” (1978), and “Mard” (1985), where she played the emotional and sacrificial mother opposite actors like Amitabh Bachchan.
Nirupa Roy was married to Kamal Roy, and the couple had two sons. One of her sons, Yogesh Roy, has occasionally spoken about his mother’s legacy and personal life in interviews.
She passed away on October 13, 2004, in Mumbai at the age of 73, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that defined an era of Indian cinema. Though she did not have a daughter, she was affectionately known as the “Mother of Bollywood” for her nurturing roles that resonated deeply with audiences.
Even today, Nirupa Roy is remembered not just as an actress, but as a symbol of maternal love and sacrifice in Indian films — a true legend who continues to live on through her unforgettable performances.
