Carlson is hitched to Susan Carlson (née Andrews). They met while in secondary school at St. George's School and were hitched in 1991 in the secondary school chapel. They have four children.
Carlson is an Episcopalian and "adores the ceremony, however [he] loathes the nonconformists who run the denomination."
Carlson quit savoring liquor 2002, "having concluded that neither the wonderful evenings nor the unsavory mornings were improving his life." Years sooner, he had stopped smoking and supplanted cigarettes with nicotine gum, which he purchases in mass from New Zealand and "bites constantly."
Carlson is a Deadhead (a devotee of the musical gang the Grateful Dead), and said in a 2005 meeting that he had gone to more than 50 of their concerts. He was old buddies with Nevada massage parlor proprietor Dennis Hof and went to his burial service in 2018.
In 2018, a gathering of around 20 activists from Smash Racism D.C. fought outside Carlson's Washington, D.C., home. Carlson's carport was vandalized with a shower painted revolutionary image. Police reacted in practically no time and the nonconformists were dispersed.
